Focusing, and how we work together

A gentle, body-oriented way of listening to what you already know, so the next step can come from somewhere real.

What is Focusing?

Focusing is a practice developed by philosopher and psychologist Eugene Gendlin. It grew out of research into a simple question: why do some people change and grow, while others stay stuck, even with plenty of insight?

What made the difference was a particular kind of attention. The people who moved forward would pause and sense into a vague, bodily feeling about their situation, something not yet in words. Gendlin called this a felt sense.

A felt sense might be a tightness when you think about your work, a heaviness around a relationship, or a fluttery "something" you can't quite name. Focusing is the skill of turning toward that something with curiosity and kindness, and letting it show you more. When it does, there's often a felt shift: a small release, a new understanding, a next step that wasn't available before.

What happens in a session

Sessions are one-on-one and online. Each one is different, because we follow what's alive for you, but they tend to move like this:

  1. ArrivingWe slow down and let your attention settle into your body. No need to have anything figured out.
  2. Finding what wants attentionYou notice what's here: an issue, a decision, a feeling, or simply a sense that something's off.
  3. Sensing the felt senseInstead of analyzing it, you sense how the whole thing feels in your body, right now.
  4. Finding a handleA word, image, or gesture that fits the feeling. We check it against your body until it resonates.
  5. Keeping it companyYou stay with it gently, the way you'd sit with a friend, and let it tell you more about what it needs.
  6. Receiving the shiftWe honor whatever comes, whether that's relief, clarity, or a next step, and you bring it back into your life.

I guide, reflect back what I hear, and help you stay with what's emerging. You stay in charge of your own process the whole way through.
